For several years, a simple whiteboard calendar hung on the wall. We would often use it for reminders, notes, and upcoming shows. Then we stopped using the whiteboard. Instead we switched to digital calendars, leaving the dry erase board hanging, only to collect dust and be forgotten; yet still it was firmly attached to the wall.
As time went on, one day Bryan and Michael were jamming, and needed to write down a chord progression. Not a pen or paper in sight. Michael grabbed the closest writing utensil he could find and wrote down "Capo 1 F, D#, A#" and some other scribbled nonsense. He then realized that the marker he had used was permanent marker, not dry erase. Oops. That day the whiteboard was forever stained, branded by the chord progression that soon thereafter would be all but forgotten.
Years later, in September of 2022, Michael needed a whiteboard for work. Instead of buying a new one, he ripped the old whiteboard off the wall, cleaned off the permanent marker, and it was like brand new!
This song is about that whiteboard. The symbolisim and parallel to life's journey is included therein.
lyrics
Been hiding in plain sight,
For one too many nights
So little time, let's take a step outside, alright,
We're goin for a ride, tonight!
Reaching for warm painted skies
Seldom wondering where, or why
Hope sends reassurance to testify
There's so much more to this mortal life
Once a message lost in time
Has been revitalized
An idea written down, not memorized
Was forgotten, but now it's prioritized, (get ready for it!)
The real secret to having it all is knowing you already do
The only one who needs convincing is you
Reaching for warm painted skies
Seldom wondering where, or why
Hope sends reassurance to testify
There's so much more to this mortal life
There's so much more to this mortal life!
What's written down on my white board?
What's written down on your white board?
It's not wasted space!
It's just dry erase!
There's no permanent marker on my white board!
